Airey houses were built shortly after the Second World War under the Temporary Housing Programme 1944-49. The houses, which were constructed from pre-cast concrete panels, were meant to provide temporary accommodation but were often built to such a high standard that many of them survive to this day.

Airey construction homes fall within the classifications relating to cast-in-situ concrete low-rise dwellings. Concrete is widely used in a variety of applications in low-rise housing, including the foundations, ground-supported floor slabs and suspended slabs. Concrete in its other forms as cast stone is used as cladding, roof tiles and ornamental work.
